Kings bounce back with 3-2 win over Capitals

After a 6-4 loss on home ice, the Powell River Kings (19-10-1-0) were looking for a rebound performance Saturday. That’s exactly what they got as they picked up a 3-2 win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals (14-12-2-2).

Much like what happened in each period on Friday, the Kings got on the board early in the first. Ben Berard found the puck in the near corner in the Capitals end before throwing it to the point for Jake Kohlhauser.

Kohlhauser fired a wrist shot at the net and Kyle Betts deflected it past the goaltender Lane Michasiw for his eighth of the season.

A few minutes later Josh Coblenz scored his second goal of the year when he found a loose puck at the side of the goal after a shot from Hunter Findlater was blocked.

Shortly after the goal, Coblenz made a great defensive play as he blocked on a shot on a wide-open net chance for the Capitals.

The Kings received a four minute power play in the final few minutes of the first period, and early in the second, Curtis McCarrick sniped the top left corner on Michasiw for his ninth of the year.

That was all the scoring the Kings would do Saturday night. Betts had a great chance for his second of the game with a shorthanded breakaway in the third, but was stopped by the blocker of Michasiw.

Cowichan got goals from Max Newton in the second and a late one with 1:15 left by Rhett Kingston, but the Kings held on for the 3-2 win. Brian Wilson made 19 saves for his 11th win of the season.

After a week of practice the Kings will head out on the road for their longest trip of the season. It begins Thursday afternoon when they head to Chilliwack. After a full night of rest the Kings will take on the Chiefs Friday, the Penticton Vees Saturday and the Trail Smoke Eaters Sunday afternoon.

The full trip will encompass over 1,500 kilometres.
