Kings road trip ends with loss to Clippers

The Powell River Kings wrapped up their three-game road trip to kick off their season with a 5-2 loss to the Nanaimo Clippers Sunday afternoon.

For the second straight game, the Kings opened the scoring. While on the power play Carter Turnbull had the puck at the bottom of the left face-off circle and let a snap shot go, beating Austin Roden on the glove side 5:39 into the game.

It took the Clippers just 13 seconds to respond however, as Shawn Guison let a slap shot go from the left point that eluded all the traffic in front and beat Mitch Adamyk, who was making his first career start.

Late in the period the Clippers would take the lead. A two-on-one saw Ben Solin send a pass from the left wing to Matt Creamer on the right wing, and he fired the puck into the open cage to make it 2-1 with 2:02 remaining.

Adaymk made his finest save of the night with two seconds left on the clock in the period, denying Lucas Finner trying to cut across the crease and tuck the puck in blocker side.

The only goal of the second period came off the stick of Tristan Mullin. Three seconds after a power play expired, Mullin snuck a shot from the bottom of the right face-off circle between the blocker and body of Roden to tie the game at 4:09.

Much like the third period against the Capitals Saturday, the Clippers scored a pair of quick goals to take the lead a few minutes into the period.

First it was Tristan Crozier jamming home a puck that bounced off the boards behind the net and behind Adamyk at 4:18. Just over two minutes later, Solin came down the right wing and cut across the crease to tuck it past Adamyk.

The Clippers added an empty net goal with 42 seconds left to make the final score 5-2.

The Kings now return home to prepare for their home opener against the Penticton Vees Friday night.

The Kings are also hosting their Icebreaker event Tuesday evening in the upper foyer at the Complex. Season ticket holders can pick up their tickets and meet the 2016-17 Powell River Kings.
