Kings win first game of 16-17, 3-2 over Surrey

It took five games, but the Powell River Kings have their first win of the 2016-17 season after a 3-2 home win over the Surrey Eagles.

The Kings wasted no time opening the scoring, as Hunter Findlater fired a quick wrist shot coming down the left wing, beating Daniel Davidson over the glove for his first goal of the year just 1:20 into the game.

Despite plenty of quality scoring chances, the Kings were up by just the one goal heading into the second period with the shots 12-11 in favour of the home team.

The Kings had two early power play chances in the second period, but despite good puck movement and scrambles in front of the net they weren’t able to extend their lead until late in the period.

Carter Turnbull carried the puck down the left wing into the Eagles zone before cutting in front of the net and trying to jam the puck passed Davidson. Andy Stevens came in from the point and looked to have an empty net, but his shot hit a body in front. The Kings stuck with it, and Turnbull was able to jam home the rebound to give the Kings a 2-0 lead.

Just over a minute later the Kings found themselves in penalty trouble as Josh Coblenz was given a five-minute major for a blow to the head when he hit Jeffery Stewart into the boards.

The Eagles took advantage as Logan Mostat deflected his fourth goal of the season in the slot with 1:45 left in the second period.

With another 1:55 of power play time to start the third, Mostat struck again by wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Mitch Adamyk to tie the game just 49 seconds into the third.

The Kings were undeterred however, and four minutes later Gavin Rauser snuck a puck through the pads of an unsuspecting Davidson from the right-wing corner to restore the Kings lead.

Three goals was all the Kings needed as they would hold on for the 3-2 win on the strength of 33 saves from Adamyk.

The Kings now prepare for the BCHL showcase in Chilliwack. The Kings two games are 10 a.m Friday Sept 23 against the Wenatchee Wild (3-0-0-0) and 1:00 PM against the Trail Smoke Eaters (1-3-0-0) Saturday Sept 24.
