Stevens’ Game Winner Disallowed in 3-3 Tie

Andy Stevens scored one of the prettiest goals of the season, except he didn’t as the Kings thought they’d won the game in overtime before having to settle for a 3-3 tie to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Friday night at the Hap Parker Arena.

Good jump from the Kings early however the ice began to heavily tilt in favour of the visitors with Salmon Arm getting on the board through Rhett Kingston’s 17th of the year and a 1-0 Salmon Arm lead. Late in the period the Kings went to the powerplay and cashed in as Neal Samanski buried a rebound from a Jonny Evans point shot for his 3rd in as many games and 6th of the season and it was 1-1 through 20 despite the Kings being outshot 20-9.

Into the 2nd and the Silverbacks retook the lead through Tanner Campbell and it was 2-1. Then on a rush down the right wing, Josh Coblenz made a nice play to gain entry into the zone before finding Carter Turnbull on the left faceoff dot to fire home his team-leading 19th of the year and it was 2-2. Salmon Arm retook the lead through Campbell’s 2nd of the game and held a 3-2 advantage through 40. Shots 14-11 Powell River in the period.

The third period saw the Kings push, but it wasn’t until late with the net empty that the Kings found an equalizer as Ben Berard got a puck along the right wall, walking down and firing on net. The puck shot up off goaltender Kyle Dumba and eventually rolling in. Evans initially claimed the goal however it was credited to Berard as his co-team-leading 19th of the year and it was 3-3 through regulation.

Overtime came and the Kings had the bulk of the pressure. Two minutes into the extra session and the Kings had possession in the offensive zone, finding Stevens at the right point. Stevens skated past two Silverback players before opening up to the forehand, drawing out the goaltender and sliding it past Kyle Dumba…his 6th of the season and the Kings 4-3 winners.

Not so fast. After initially calling a ‘good’ goal, all four officials conferenced at centre, talking with the goal judge as well and ultimately waving off the goal. This after the Kings celebrated and had half left the ice for the dressing room.

The remainder of overtime saw chances for both teams but a second game winner was not to be had (unlike 2014) and the game stayed tied at 3. Mitch Adamyk takes his 2nd 70 minute result of the year as the Kings see their record move to 20-12-4-4.
