Three power play goals lead Kings to 5-1 win over Langley

The Powell River Kings played just two games at home in the month of October, but they made good on their chances by winning both of them. Sunday afternoon the Langley Rivermen were in town and the Kings used three power play goal to down the Rivermen 5-1.

The offence started early for the Kings as just 1:59 into the game Kyle Betts batted a puck out of mid air for his fifth goal of the season off a shot from Ben Berard.

Less than six minutes later Cam Donaldson muscled his way to the front of the net from the left wing corner and jammed a puck past Bo Didur for his league-leading seventh power play goal of the season.

Late in the period the Kings extended their lead as Carter Turnbull gathered the puck in the far corner and walked towards the slot before firing a wrist shot over the glove of Didur.

The Kings would score their second power play goal of the night in the second period. Callum Volpe took a cross-ice pass at the left point from Liam Lawson before spotting Jonny Evans down low. Volpe sent the hard pass down to the far side of the net for Evans to fire over the glove of an outstretched Didur to make it 4-0.

Early in the final frame tensions boiled over for the Rivermen. Jack Long up ended Satchel Clendenin with a hip check just inside the Kings end, and Langey’s captain took exception. Cooper Leitch dropped his gloves and went after Long who didn’t retaliate, resulting in Leitch getting seven minutes in penalties along with a game misconduct.

During the seven-minute power play, things got even rougher as Kyle Betts and Zac Masson were battling in front of the Langley net before they decided to settle things and drop the gloves. Both players landed some rights before falling to the ice, ending their nights. It was Betts’ first career fight.

Just 19 seconds after the fight, the Kings would get a five on three power play chance as Cameron Ginnetti was given a minor for roughing after the whistle. The Kings took just 10 seconds into the two-man advantage to capitalize as after a mad scramble in front of the Langley net, Evans found a loose puck and backhanded it over a diving Braedon Fleming to make it 5-0.

Langley rounded out the scoring in the game when Nicholas Ponak, a former King, redirected a shot from the left point off the stick of John Schuldt past Brian Wilson.

The final shots read 56-26 in favour of the Kings as they won their third straight game, and sixth straight on home ice. Now the Kings head to the Island for a three-game road trip next weekend, beginning in Duncan against the Cowichan Valley Capitals Friday night.
