Vees spoil Kings home opener with 3-1 win

The Powell River Kings returned home to the Hap Parker Arena after an 0-3 road trip to start the season, but an energetic crowd wasn’t enough to help them to victory as the Penticton Vees spoiled the home opener with a 3-1 win.

Penticton opened the scoring just under four minutes into the first period as Owen Sillinger was behind the Kings net, and threw the puck towards the slot. Ty Amonte was parked in front and jammed home the puck to make it 1-0 Vees.

Nearly ten minutes later the Vees extended their lead. Jacob Kamps carried the puck into the Kings zone before being sandwiched by the two Kings defenders. The puck came loose to the right side and allowed Noah Jordan to carry it to the net on a partial break where he beat Brian Wilson to make it 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.

There were no goals in the second period but both goaltenders made some fine saves, none better than Wilson’s cross-ice glove save off the stick of Taylor Ward.

The Vees began the third period with 1:30 of power play time, but while they weren’t able to connect on that man advantage, shortly after they scored again.

Jonny Tychonick had the puck at the left point before sending a pass to the far side of the net for an open Ryley Rissling who tapped it home to make it 3-0.

The Kings quickly answered back as Jonny Evans got his own rebound after a cross-ice pass from Cam Donaldson, chipping it passed an outstretched Matthew Robson to cut the lead down to 3-1.

Unfortunately for the Kings they wouldn’t get any closer as the final horn sounded and the Kings dropped to 0-4 on the season. The final shots were 31-29 in favour of the Kings.

The next game for Powell River is Sunday afternoon against the Surrey Eagles. The Eagles will be finishing a three-game road trip, while the Kings will be playing one more home game before heading to the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack next weekend.
