Vipers Blank Kings in Vernon

The Powell River Kings offence failed to click for the first time this season as Vernon Vipers goaltender Ty Taylor made 35 saves for his 2nd shutout of the season and handing the Kings a 2-0 loss on Saturday night.

A scoreless but entertaining first period saw both teams with chances. For the Kings the best was Carter Turnbul looking to drag a puck in close but wasn’t able to lift it over the pad of an outstretched Taylor. Shots were 12-11 through 20 with nothing on the scoreboard.

Into the second period and the Vipers struck first on their second man advantage as Jack Judson pinched back door for a goal to give the home team the lead. Then, later in the frame, the Vipers sprung Brett Stapley out of the penalty box on a partial breakaway. Nathan Kelly got back and got a hold of Stapley, drawing a penalty call but that was quickly waved off as the puck found a way past Adamyk and the Vipers a 2-0 lead. Shots on goal through the 2nd period were 11 each for two period totals of 23-22 Vernon.

A third period saw the game begin to become more emotional. The officials calling four ten minute misconducts throughout the course of the hockey game for dissent and other vocal infractions. The Kings would continue to pour pressure on but were unable to generate the needed scoring chances with Ty Taylor turning aside all 35 shots he faced for the shutout and a 2-0 Vernon win. Final shots on goal were 36-35 Vipers.

The Kings wrap their three game road trip through the Interior of BC on Sunday afternoon against the Trail Smoke Eaters. Coverage of the game will be live beginning at 2:40pm with the pre-game show, followed by a 3:00pm puck drop at Cominco Arena. The Kings are 1-1 against the Smokies this year falling 4-2 at the Showcase in September, but winning 5-3 at home last weekend.
