Capitals take 2-0 series lead with an overtime victory

Duncan, BC – The Cowichan Valley Capitals defeated the Powell River Kings 7-6 in overtime to take a 2-0 first round series lead on Saturday at the Cowichan Community Centre.

Brady Lynn scored the overtime winner, as he tracked a bouncing puck at the left circle and golfed it over Thomas Wardle’s shoulder and into the net to give the Capitals their first overtime playoff win since last season.

The Kings came back from a 6-4 deficit in the third period, forcing overtime. Devin Leduc scored his first career playoff goal to make it a one-goal game midway through the frame, and Levi Glasman banked home a loose puck to tie it with 13-seconds to play.

The Kings lose their first overtime playoff contest since the 2018 post-season, having won their three previous overtime games. The franchise also goes down 2-0 in a series for the first time since the third round against Prince George also in the 2018 post-season.

The Powell River Kings went 4-for-6 on the power-play, and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. The Kings are now 5-for-11 on the man-advantage this series, with the penalty kill going 5-for-6 this series.

Primo Self scored three goals and tallied an assist in a four point effort, while Lynn had two points (1G/1A), and Clark Webster finished with two assists. Capitals goaltender Zach Borgiel made 47-saves on 53-shots.

Glasman (1G/2A) and Ethan Schmunk (1G/2A) both tallied three point games, while Brett Roloson (1G/1A) and Davis Pennington (2A) notched two point games. Derek Krall was pulled after 33:25 of play, giving up five goals on 24-shots. Thomas Warlde played the final 38-minutes, and allowed two goals on 16-shots in the loss.

The Powell River Kings resume action Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:00 p.m., for game three at the Hap Parker Arena. Game four will be played at home on Wednesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m., as well.
