Former King Ethan Cox up for Humanitarion Award

Ethan Cox and the Colgate University Raiders won?t be playing in the Frozen Four, but the Powell River Kings graduate will be in Detroit on Friday night as one of seven nominees for the 2010 Hockey Humanitarian Award, which will be presented along with the Hobey Baker Award on the eve of the NCAA Championship Finals.

While his former Kings team is battling for the Fred Page Cup title, Cox has been working effortlessly in the community around Colgate University.

The Richmond native helped to raise over $14,000 for local and national charities this season, but it?s the least of his community contributions during his collegiate hockey career. In 2007/08, Cox raised $25,000 for the American Cancer Society. Yet, despite all his efforts, the BCHL grad gives a lot of praise to the community for their generous support in his drive to make the world a better place.

?Without our fans, these events wouldn?t be possible,? says Cox. ?It speaks volumes on the local community that we can gather around a common cause and help the less fortunate during the holidays.?

Cox joins six other college players, men and women in Division I and Division III hockey, in being nominated for the honourable award: Kirsten Dier (Amherst College), Dion Knelsen (University of Alaska), Sam Kuzyk (Adrian College), Zachary Miller (Williams College), Brigid O?Gorman (Connecticut College) and Brandon Vossberg (Denver University).

First awarded in 1996, the Hockey Humanitarian Award is given annually to the college player who most personifies true community spirit by selflessly giving time, leadership and commitment to charitable causes with notable success. The candidates are not just outstanding athletes, but they are individuals many people look up to in their community.
