Kings bitten by the Dogs 4-1

Kings don't lose very often at home but if you have to take one on the chin then lose to the best.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs have certainly cranked it up since losing the season opener here in September 9-1. At the time things weren't looking good for the Dogs but to their credit they've come full circle.

Losers of just nine more games, they've made a steady climb to the top of the Conference and now continue to put some distance between themselves and the second place Kings.

This game was going to be a battle and both teams came out of the gate hard. It looked like the Kings had the edge in hits and play in the opening period and they outshot the Dogs 9-3. No goals though.

Perhaps the lowlight of the period for the Kings was when Mat Bodie was given a game misconduct for a hit from behind at 6:39. The Kings responded nicely but they needed Bodie in this important game.

The second was similar with the Kings holding an 18-9 edge in shots but near the end of the period Alberni struck for a couple of quick goals.

On the first goal at 17:29, it was Tye Lewis flying down the left wing, toe drag and snap shot up over Garteig's shoulder.

One minute later, Lewis was behind the net and found Johny Rogic in front who one timed the Dogs second to go up 2-0.

The Kings were stunned by the sudden turn of events but had a two man advantage to turn things around heading into the third period.

Whoops, no goals and no shots and then to add insult to injury Dog's Frank Riddle jumped out of the penalty box and into the play go grab the puck and ring one off the iron and into the net for the Dog's third goal.

At this point, Kent Lewis pulled Michael Garteig and Josh Watson took over in the Kings' net.

King's Daniel Carr spoiled the shoutout with a powerplay goal at 9:17 but on this night the Dogs had an answer for everything and Mark MacMillan scored within a minute to make the final 4-1.

Kings outshot the dogs 38-20 overall and had they scored on a couple of chances would have been right in this game. They have to start burying some of those pucks.

Everything else is there and these two teams are going to be battling all the way into March. Hopefully the Kings can rally to even the score on January 15, the next time the Dogs come back into Powell River.
