Kings Drop Season Opener to Express

BURNABY (April 3, 2021) – The Powell River Kings opened the 2020-21 season on Saturday afternoon with a 7-6 loss to the Coquitlam Express. It was the first game for the Kings in 393 days and was played behind closed doors at Scotia Barn in Burnaby.

The first goal of the game was scored by the Kings courtesy of Ben Brunette at 12:46 of the opening period, which stood as the lone marker through 20 minutes. Both sides exchanged goals to open the second period before Ryan Tattle, Christian MacDougall and Dante Berrettoni netted three straight for the Express to make it a 4-3 game. Coquitlam outshot the Kings 22-20 through the first two periods.

Josh Kagan managed his second goal of the game 21 seconds into the third period to tie the score, while Adamo Santia followed up 2:50 later to give the Kings a 5-4 lead. The Express responded on the power play a short time later with Tattle’s second goal, then Kagan completed the hat-trick at 8:58. This would prove to be the last of the offence for the Kings, as the Express’ Sam Marit and James Bohn scored each within the a span of 1:42 to secure the win.
