Kings Kick Off Homestand with Capital Victory

The Powell River Kings have opened a three game home stand over the next four days on a winning note, using some solid goaltending and timely scoring to defeat the Cowichan Capitals 4-1.

A solid start for the Kings who controlled the early play, getting out to an early lead in shots on goal. For the second consecutive game the Kings were able to score this 1-0 goal, this time through Liam Lytton to give the home team a slender 1-0 lead through the opening period, outshooting Cowichan 15-7 in the frame.

Into the 2nd and the Kings got an early, albeit somewhat controversial goal. Ben Berard latched onto a Ryan Brushett point shot that went wide, cannoned mid air off the end wall and came out front. Berard bunted it from the side of the goal and found the back of the net. Referees decided, and replays showed that Berard’s stick was well below the cross bar despite counter claims from the Capitals and the Kings led 2-0.

Cowichan got on the board midway through the frame via Niko Esposito-Selivanov’s first in the BCHL as he was left alone in front, however the Kings got it back quickly as Ryan Brushett fired a one-timer on the powerplay for his 5th of the season and his 7th straight game with a point in Powell River coloursĀ  for a 3-1 Kings lead through 40.

The third period saw Powell River put the game beyond reach early as Mitch Williams got on the end of a threaded needle pass from Matt Fawcett and slid home his 4th of the season to make it 4-1. Hayden Missler did the rest, stopping 23/24 in his Kings debut for his first win of the season.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Mitch Williams (Kings) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Ryan Brushett (Kings) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Niko Esposito-Selivanov – 1 goal

The Kings continue a 3-game home stand on Friday night, entertaining the Trail Smoke Eaters at 7:00pm from the Hap Parker Arena.
