Kings lose 3-1 lead, Capitals take game one 6-3

Duncan, BC – The Cowichan Valley Capitals rallied back from a two-goal deficit and topped the Powell River Kings 6-3 in game one of the Island Divison Semis on Friday night at the Cowichan Community Centre.

The Powell River Kings carried a 3-1 lead into the late parts of the second period. Reilly Moran lifted a wrist-shot into the top left corner, and Ethan Schmunk banked home a rebound on the power play for the two-goal advantage.

Brady Lynn scored a key goal for the Capitals making it 3-2 after 40 minutes of play. In the third period, the Capitals scored four goals, with two of them coming in the first two minutes of the frame. Capitals captain Cruz Cote deflected a point shot into the net to tie it 17 seconds in, and Will Arquiett followed with a breakaway goal for a 4-3 lead.

The Powell River Kings drop game one of round one for the first time since the 2013 post-season.

Derek Krall made five marvelous saves early on in the hockey game to keep it at a one-goal game. He stopped 34 of 40 in his fourth career playoff appearance. For the Kings, Dawson McKay opened the scoring for his first goal of 2020, while Schmunk and Moran netted their first career playoff goals.

For the Capitals, Zach Borgiel made 38-saves on 40-shots, Dimitri Mikrogiannakis tallied three assists, and Brady Lynn totaled two goals and an assist in a Capitals game one victory.

These two teams met again tonight in Duncan for game two at 7:00 p.m. Games three and four are back at the Hap Parker Arena for Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
