Kings shutout by Vipers, 3-0 on Saturday

Vernon, BC – The Powell River Kings (5-2) were shutout, 3-0 by the Vernon Vipers (3-2) on Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

Cam McDonald opened the scoring for the Vipers five minutes into the second period. Then just over three minutes later, Ben Sanderson tipped home Doug Scott’s hard shot from the point, giving them a 2-0. McDonald would later put the game away, scoring on the empty net for his second of the game.

The Kings drop their second straight game, and are shutout for the first time since November 16th, 2018 against the Prince George Spruce Kings.

Kings goaltender Matteo Paler-Chow was solid, making 34-saves in the loss.

“He gave us a chance to win and he made some key saves when he had to,” said Kings assistant coach Brock Sawyer. “The second one that beat him was kind of a back-breaker because we didn’t block the shot, and their guy got a stick on it right at the last second.”

“He (Paler-Chow) was good back there, but we weren’t good defensively. We were hemmed in our zone for long periods of time.”

The Kings were without Jack Brackett, Jack Long and Jacob Paler-Chow, as the they dressed 11-forwards and six defensemen.

“That’s something that guys should relish and take advantage of,” added Sawyer. “It’s a young group learning how to play on the road, so you’re going to have to play in difficult situations. You’re going to have to play tired and you have just put your nose down and play hard.”

With the loss, Kings fell into a tie for first place in BCHL Island Division standings with Cowichan Valley. Both teams hold 5-2 records, four points ahead of Alberni Valley and Victoria, and five ahead of last place Nanaimo.

The Powell River Kings are back in action on Saturday, September 28th in Victoria. All the action will be live on 95.7 Coast FM and Hockey TV.
