Kings slide by the Express 6-2

Two tired teams made their way over from the island to meet at the Recreation Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Burnaby suffered an 8-4 loss to the Victoria Grizzlies on Saturday night while Powell River was edging Cowichan Valley 2-1 in double overtime.

Kings looked to be the fresher of the two when the game got underway and hard checking, always hustling Ben Schmidt caught a break on the Burnaby doorstep and stuffed in his 10th of the year at 1:31.

Teaghan Waugh bounced a hard shot off the crossbar a few minutes later but the Kings' next goal came on a blast from Mat Bodie as he backpedalled across the high slot.

His goal came on the powerplay and that's how Burnaby got back into the game.

Their powerplay goal was a slot shot off the post and a rebound that was pumped in by Zac Ashdown.

Waugh got his first goal in the BCHL when he picked up a rebound and pushed it into the net to make 3-1 Kings at the end of one period.

Kings got a couple of unanswered goals in the  second and pretty well coasted from there.

Jordan Grant added one more in the third when he shot the puck directly off the faceoff and it went in off a D-man's skate.

Burnaby added one more powerplay score to end the scoring and make the final 6-2 Kings.

The end of the game came as a relief to both teams and for the Kings it represented a successful end of a three game stint in two and one half days.

January 10, six o'clock is the trading deadline for the BCHL and coach Kent Lewis said after the game, “we are not talking to any clubs at this time because we like what we have on our team.”

That should come as no surprise to Kings' fans as Lewis has always been a players' coach in the sense that development of players on the team is desired ahead of acquisitions.
