Training Camp Underway

As of about an hour ago, training camp for the 2011/2012 season was underway at the Hap. In ‘celebration’ of this, I started my serious season preps. I’m coming in largely blind with regards to the histories and backgrounds of the players on this team, so extensive research is crucial. Here are some thoughts as I go through:

– Very impressed by Teagan Waugh’s resume. The Nanaimo native played 3 seasons in the BCMML and ended up the 4th highest scorer in the leagues history (he’s the highest non-Vancouver NW Giant). He’s also up there in goals (tied 2nd) and games played (4th). I know how hard that league is, so I’m impressed by his history, and the fact that statistically, he’s gotten better every year.
– If your backup goalie posts a 10-3 record and a .938 save percentage, you know you’ve got depth. With Michael Garteig gone, Sean Maguire could step into the starters role, but when the other goalie is an RBC winning net minder, competition is going to be fierce. Two great goalies give you a chance to win all 60 games…however it puts the pressure on the skaters and tells them they can’t take a night off. Jamie Phillips’ addition to the squad will make Coastal Conference shooters shake.
– The number of high level college commitments is fantastic too! Jutzi, Dalrymple, Richardson, and Schuler all heading to great schools in the next couple of years. Just shows the talent pool the BCHL attracts and the development of talent that takes place in this organization.

That’s it for now. Hoping to talk to some of the coaching staff shortly about their reactions to camp. Won’t be able to get any audio up until next week, but we’ll give you some ideas about what is going on!
