Brubacher RIT-bound in 2016/2017

Powell River Kings defenceman Adam Brubacher has committed to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for the 2016/2017 season.

Brubacher, 20, is in his final year of Junior hockey and joined the Kings at the January 10th trade deadline after starting the season in Prince George. He leads the BCHL in goal scoring and is third in points among fellow defencemen. The process of joining RIT came about recently and moved quickly.

“A couple of weeks ago I first talked with RIT, they said they were impressed with my game,” said Brubacher. “Scouts had seen me the last couple of years in Elmira, saw me in Prince George and saw me here. From there we talked about the program, the athletics and academic side of things and I thought it was the best fit in all aspects for me.”

Brubacher plans to study business or economics at RIT beginning in the fall.

“Adam’s a guy that we really went after at the deadline” said Kings Head Coach Kent Lewis. “Fans have already seen what he can do on the ice, he’s helped our powerplay and given us a lot of options on the blue line. Off the ice he’s been a role model for the younger guys, coming into the playing group and led by example. We’re very happy that he’s been able to secure this next step in his hockey career.”

The 6’3, 205lb rear guard had spent the previous three seasons playing Junior B hockey in his hometown of Elmira before moving to the BCHL for his 20-year-old season. The goal of playing in the NCAA had been one that pushed him to the BCHL.

“It’s nice to get this off my chest,” said Brubacher. “It’s nice that everything has come full circle, the fact that they’ve watched me play in Elmira and out here.”

Brubacher also acknowledges there is a lot of work to do in the remainder of this season and what he hopes is a short off-season to ready himself for college hockey.

“I want to work on my skating and defensive ability,” said Brubacher. “With stronger and more skilled guys who are potentially four years older than me, I need to work on my skating, my strength so that I can be better at both ends of the ice.”

Brubacher follows former King Daniel Schuler to RIT, who is due to graduate this year after a four year collegiate career and Matt Garbowsky who wrapped his college stint last season and has since turned pro. RIT plays in the Atlantic Hockey division of the NCAA.

The Kings would like to congratulate Adam on this achievement.
