Kings Fall in Overtime to Bulldogs

The Kings dropped their 6th game in overtime this season on Friday night, a 4-3 scoreline to the Bulldogs at the Hap Parker Arena.

A good crowd came out to greet the Kings as they opened up a season long seven game home stand at the Hap Parker Arena. The Kings responded by controlling the outset of the hockey game, getting out to a 5-0 shots advantage. However it was Alberni to draw first blood against the run of play as Bradley Ong broke the deadlock with his 3rd of the season and a 1-0 score.

The Bulldogs kept the Kings at bay until late in the period when the Kings went to the powerplay and despite failing to convert inside the two minutes, converted the second after as Carter Turnbull beat the goaltender for his team-leading 24th of the season and a 1-1 game through 20. Shots 11-7 Powell River.

Into the 2nd and the Kings got another good jump to start the period. This time scoring on their chances as Josh Coblenz buried a rebound to the side of the goal from a Sam Pouliot shot, his 7th of the year and a 2-1 Powell River advantage. The Kings would hold that until the final minute of the second period as local product Keaton Mastrodonato scored against his home town team, a snipe from the faceoff circle and a 2-2 score after 40. Shots 15-10 in the period for the Kings.

The third saw the Bulldogs strike to take the lead early. Darren Rizzolo floating a puck to net that handcuffed Adamyk, his 5th and a 3-2 Alberni lead. The Kings continued to push, with a plethora of chances in the period, but it wasn’t until a sensational individual effort from Andy Stevens that the Kings were able to draw level. A first shot attempt was blocked in front, so Stevens grabbed the rebound at the right point, skated in on his backhand and slid it home for his 2nd in as many games and 7th of the year, 3-3 through regulation.

Overtime was short, but not sweet. Alberni’s Paul Selleck scoring after the Kings knocked a puck away but not out of the reach of the Bulldogs forward, he beat Adamyk for his 16th of the year and it was all over. 4-3 Alberni. Kings outshoot the Bulldogs 35-26.

Three Stars of the Game

2. Carter Turnbull (Kings) – 1 goal, 1 assist
3. Keaton Mastrodonato (Bulldogs) – 1 goal, 1 assist

The Kings continue their home stand Saturday against the Bulldogs, a 5:00pm start.
