Kings make it two in a row

Kings liked it so much the first time that they won their second game in two days against the Capitals.

They staked themselves to a 3-0 lead and unfortunately gave up a late goal to make the final 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in front of a sparse crowd of 432.

Kings started slowly in this game but the Caps were equally uninspired and play dragged through the first 18 minutes.

Kings gradually picked up the pace and on some hard cycle work a pass finally came out to JP Villeneuve who spun and shot the puck along the ice to beat Caps' goalie Dun at 18:37.

The second period started on a bad note for the Kings when Matt Scarth got tangled up with a Cap and they slid into the end boards. Scarth looked to have a shoulder injury as he left the ice with Brandon Kerr and he did not return.

Kings started to come on in the second dominating the play until they added their second goal.

Four of them crossed the blue line and the puck was eventually dropped to Dorantes who fired the puck into the Caps net at 14:28.

Kings defended their two goal through the second and into the third before Stephen Hiff was set up beautifully by captain Teagan Waugh.

All he had to do was deposit the puck into the net at 4:40 and the Kings were coasting to their second win – up 3-0.

Perhaps they lost their focus just a little when they allowed Cowichan to skate freely in front of goaltender Jonah Imoo.

Cooper dug out a loose puck in a scramble at 18:50 to spoil the shutout but the end result was still a good one for the Kings.

They managed to outshoot the Caps 33-21 and stayed out of the penalty box which has been a problem in the early games.

Coach Kent Lewis said, "I think they stuck to the plan for the most part."

"They didn't give up a lot," he said, "but we still had some brain farts out there so we have to work on them every week until we get it right."

Of the second game of a back to back set he said, "it's hard and you talk about every league – the pros, the minors and junior hockey and it's the brain."

"When you think things are going to be a tad easy it's hard to shake that thought as a group and I thought we were tentative at the beginning but we started to come along and come along," he said, "and Villeneuve's line with Dorantes and Dupont generated just a ton of stuff for us and we did what we had to do this weekend."

Kings hit the road for three games next week starting in Chilliwack, passing through Penticton and ending in Trail.
