Kings win 4-3 in overtime

Kings scratched out a 4-3 victory over Kelowna on Friday but had to comeback late in the game and win it in overtime.

This game was billed as one of the unbeatens and certainly the two teams played a tight checking game early on.

The two teams continued that way until the middle of the period but were slowed only by the parade to the penalty box.

That didn't lead to goals however, as both teams were extremely aggressive on the penalty kill and throughout the game blocked a lot of shots.

Kings broke the goose egg at 17:52 when Jarryd Leung took advantage of an attack on the Warrior net and put in his own rebound to go up 1-0.

He added a second at 0:46 of the next period when he zipped through the Warrior defence and let a shot go that surprised netminder Desautels.

Up 2-0, Kings began to get a little careless around an official willing to give them a seat in the penalty box.

Six minor penalties gave the Warrors every chance to come back on the scoreboard but Kings penalty killers were awesome and never allowed a powerplay goal.

Warriors did, however, score right at the end of one, when Firkus walked in from the point and snuck it by Jeff Smith at 10:58.

The Warrior's second goal was one Smith would want back when Jason Cotton threw, what looked like a harmless shot from the blueline, that surprised Smith and glanced in off his left pad at 15:38.

Smith bounced back to make a  huge save off Firkus with 24 seconds to go that would have put the Kings into a hole with just one period to play.

Kings fell behind 3-2 at 5:03 of the third period when a high point shot hit Smith in the chest and the rebound landed on the stick of Seb Lloyd had a clear shot at the net.

Kings struggled on the powerplay all night but when they pulled the goalie for an extra attacker Drew Dorantes tied it with 26 seconds to go in the game.

Leung worked the puck deep and gave it to Stephen Hiff who threw it into the crease and Dorantes finished the play.

Relieved to get the game to overtime 3-3 Kings did something they struggled to do all last year. Win in overtime.

Leung took care of that when he went blueline to blueline and as he crossed from right to left fired the puck back at the goal.

Desautels was caught off guard by the shot and it slid by him on the far side to give the Kings the winning goal at 1:47 of the first overtime.

Not particulary pretty but a scrappy win in the end over a very good Westside team loaded with talent.

First star Jarry Leung said, "we outplayed them five on five, but our penalties killed us and Smitty bailed us out again."

He has seen limited action so far this year but has had a good view of his team from above and on the ice.

He said, "we have to keep playing the same way, as long as we keep hitting and shooting we are going to be fine."

He talked about the Warriors who are also on a tear in their divisiion saying, "they are a really good team, really fast and really offensive."
