Kings dominate Clippers 8-0 on the road

The Powell River Kings (26-16-1-0) extended their winning streak to five with a convincing 8-0 win over the Nanaimo Clippers (15-23-5-1) on the road Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Kings exploded for six goals in the second. It all started just 48 seconds into the period when Carter Turnbull skated from the goal line to the left face-off circle and let a wrist shot fly into the top corner.

Just 24 seconds later, Jonny Evans jumped to catch a clearing attempt and set it to himself. He carried the puck from the high slot to the hashmarks and let a shot go into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Just under six minutes later, Matt Cairns caught a clearing attempt at the left point before quickly passing it to Kyle Betts in the slot. Betts stickhandled around the defender to get a clean shot, and beat Austin Roden under the glove to make it 3-0.

Betts wasn’t done there, 2:31 later while on the power play, the puck came jn front of the goal from behind the net. Turnbull tried to jam the puck in and the rebound was sitting on the blocker side of Roden for Betts to lift in his second of the game.

Nearly five minutes later Curtis McCarrick scored on a wraparound to make it 5-0.

The prettiest goal of the period came late when Evans sent a perfect saucer pass from the right wing to the front of the net. The puck landed right on the stick of Cam Donaldson who pulled the puck to his forehand and stuffed it past Roden to make it 6-0 after two periods.

The Clippers made a goaltending change at the start of the third period, but the Kings would add two more goals.

First it was Carmine Buono letting go a wrist shot that beat Evan Debrouwer blocker side 10:22 into the third.

Less than three minutes later, Trent Bell, and affiliate player, scored his first career BCHL goal when he deflected a centring pass from Evans into the goal.

Brian Wilson finished with 34 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Kings won 8-0.

The Kings now have two huge games against the Victoria Grizzlies. The Kings are currently eight points before Victoria for first in the division.
