Alumni Wrap: Seasons Continuing for Handful of Former Kings

While the Powell River Kings may be finished for the 2012/2013 season, hockey still plays on for a number of former players.

The NCAA is nearing its Frozen Four, April 11-13 in Pittsburgh. A pair of former Kings will be hoping to take the National Championship, with both Michael Garteig and Clay Harvey on the #1 ranked Quinnipac roster. They will play St. Cloud on April 11th, with the final on April 13th. The other semi pits UMass-Lowell against Yale.

The final four was selected from a group of 16, who played for spots this past weekend. Having their seasons halted this weekend were: Union College (Mat Bodie, Kyle Bodie, Daniel Carr), Minnesota State (Jon Jutzi), Niagara (Carsen Chubak).

Good luck to Garts and Clay, and congratulations on great seasons to all those who finished up this past weekend.

Also, Carsen Chubak wrapped up his season with another award, this from the BCHL website:

One-time Powell River Kings goalie Carsen Chubak of the Niagara University Purple Eagles has been named the Atlantic Hockey conference’s goaltender of the week for his performance in a season-ending loss to North Dakota.

Chubak helped the No. 14 Purple Eagles to the program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament, but saw the team’s season cut short by No. 7 North Dakota in the West Regional semifinal.

The Prince Albert, Sask. native made 41 saves against UND. The 2013 Top 10 Hobey Baker finalist finished the season with a 23-7-5 record, making 1028 saves.

He is seventh in the nation in goals-against average (1.91), and fourth in the nation in save percentage (.939). The seven-time AHA Goalie of the Week and two-time AHA Goalie of the Month is tied for the top spot in shutouts (6) in the country.

Chubak found himself in Niagara’s record book in a variety of categories, including ranking second on the Single-Season Shutout list (6), Single-Season Games list (35), Single Season Saves list (1028) and Single-Season Minutes Played list (2100:46).

In the 2008-09 season with the Kings, Chubak was a BCHL all-star and posted a 28-10 record, 2.53 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.

Finally, as the Kings mentioned in the Jarid Lukosevicius press release, his season continues. His Vancouver NW Giants play Red Deer this weekend, in Vancouver, for a spot in the Telus Cup as the Pacific Region representative. The Telus Cup is in Sault Ste. Marie in late April, if the Giants make it through, they’ll be one of 6 teams in the tournament from all across the country, including the host North Stars.
