Capitals score late as Kings drop 5-2 decision in Duncan

The Powell River Kings dropped their second game in a row Sunday afternoon, 5-2 at the hands of the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

For the seventh game in a row the Kings opened the scoring as a puck bounced out from behind the Capitals net, and Tristan Mullin jammed home his sixth of the season midway through the first period.

The Capitals answered back a few minutes later as Sean Driscoll took a shot from the right point that eluded the glove of Mitch Adamyk.

The period ended tied at one with the shots even at nine, though Adamyk made a few great saves to keep the game deadlocked.

Just seconds into the second period the Capitals struck on the power play when Rhett Kingston knocked the puck in during a goal mouth scramble.

Shortly after the Capitals scored again, but the goal was waved off due to the net being knocked off it’s pegs just before Ayden MacDonald scored.

The two quick strikes didn’t deter the Kings, and Adamyk made his finest save of the game just over the half way point of the period when he robbed MacDonald with his left pad on a cross-crease pass.

The save proved to be big as a few minutes later the Kings tied the game. Kyle Betts carried the puck into the Capitals zone before dropping off for Cam Donaldson. After gathering the puck, Donaldson spotted Jonny Evans charging to the net on the left side and fed him the puck. Evans cut across the ice and got Lane Michasiw to go down before sliding the puck along the ice passed an outstretched leg to tie the game.

The goal would ensure the second period ended tied at two as both teams were looking to get back into the win column after losing their games the previous night.

It took until the final few minutes of the game for someone to take the lead, and it was the Capitals as Max Newton deflected a shot from the point passed Adamyk.

The Capitals then added two empty-net goals for the 5-2 final. The loss drops the Kings record to 7-6, and the team is now off until next weekend when they head to the mainland for another three game road trip which begins Friday night in Coquitlam.
