Donaldson’s OT winner gives Kings sixth straight win

It took just over 68 minutes, but the Powell River Kings win streak was extended to six with Cam Donaldson’s power play goal in double overtime against the Victoria Grizzlies Saturday night.

Much like Friday against Vernon, the Kings were seemingly in control of the game through the first 20 minutes with a 2-0 lead.

Johan Steen scored his second goal in as many games when he took a shot from the right face-off circle that beat Matthew Galajda blocker side on the power play.

Twenty-six seconds later, Kyle Betts took a pass from Cam Donaldson and tapped home his second of the season to make it 2-0.

In the second period the Grizzlies controlled play for extended periods of time, and Cory Hatcher got them within one just under four minutes into the frame. Hatcher took a pass from Jake Stevens at the right face-off circle and beat Mitch Adamyk.

While the third period was more even than the third, the Grizzlies got the only goal when Cody Van Leirop let got a slap shot from the high slot that beat Adamyk over the glove with seven and a half minutes left in the game.

The Kings had a power play opportunity with under two minutes left in regulation, but weren’t able to find the game winner.

After the first overtime of four on four solved nothing, in double OT Carter Turnbull carried the puck into the Grizzlies zone with speed and tried to cut around Nathan Looysen.

Looysen tried to slow Turnbull down, but ended up tripping him and was sent to the box. The man advantage resulted on a 4-on-3 situation due to the 3-on-3 overtime format.

On the ensuing power play, Liam Lawson had the puck at the right point and sent it across the ice to Tristan Mullin. Mullin sent it down low for Donaldson at the side of the net and he quickly let a one timer go, sneaking the puck past Matthew Galajda for his sixth goal in the last four games.

The win improves the Kings record to 6-4-0-0, putting them within two points of the division-leading Grizzlies.

The Kings have the week off from games as they prepare for next weekends road trip to the island which begins Friday against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.
