Kings Blank Rivermen 7-0

Before the game, Kent Lewis and I spoke on the Kings habit recently of scoring by committee. That’s exactly what followed as the Kings earned their 4th win over the Rivermen with their 4th shutout of the Langley side, a 7-0 dismantling on Thursday night.

The Kings got things going early through a 1st period goal from Cohen Adair, who somehow roofed a puck on James Barr from in close, his 19th of the year and 1-0 Kings. That was the score through the opening 20 minutes, but just 58 seconds into the 2nd, Matt Scarth would make it 2-0 on a play he started, a give and go with Chris Williams for his 12th of the year.

3-0 midway through the 2nd period when Chris Williams skated down the right wing and got a shot away which snuck through. Then the highlight of the night, just 2 minutes after the Williams goal, Brandan Smith scored his 1st ever BCHL goal, banging away in front after a low shot from Steven Schmidt generated a rebound in front, 4-0 Kings and that chased Rivermen starter James Barr.

In came Jim Kruger, but no better luck, the Kings would make it 5-0 with less than 2 to play in the 2nd frame, Carter Shinkaruk on a centering feed from Matt Scarth, then 6-0 straight off a faceoff through Jon Jutzi’s blast from the point and finally, 7-0 when Teagan Waugh got credit for a shot with deflected up high off a stick then trickled into the net past Kruger.

The lone dark spot for the team was Chase Haley, who was an AP callup for the game, injured (quite possibly broke) his ankle in the 1st period and had to leave the game. No update on his exact status available at the moment, but it looked like a severe injury when he was on the receiving end of a good, clean hit from Ray Bell, and landed awkwardly on his right leg.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Brandan Smith (Kings) – 1st BCHL Goal
  2. Matt Scarth (Kings) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. Brandon Tidy (Kings) – 1 assist

Next game for the Kings is Friday night, as they are in Surrey to face the Eagles. It is a 7:00pm start and you can catch it live on 95.7 SunFM.
