Kings blank the Clippers 3-0

Kings had one of their best 60 minute efforts of the year to win the first of two against the Clippers this weekend.

Matt Scarth got the winner at 3:26 of the first period when Carter Shinkaruk let a shot go from the circle and he tipped it by Faust.

Jamie Phillips was very good for the Kings in net and he made a spectacular save in the opening minute of the third off Luke Gordon in the slot to hold the Clippers off the board.

There wasn't another goal in this game until the Kings got a couple of powerplay opportunites later in the third.

After they came up empty on a 5 on 3 chance the Kings had another man advantage soon after and picked up their insurance goal.

Chris Williams got the screen shot he wanted and let a wrist shot go that was deflected by a Clipper stick and beat Faust.

The way the Kings were looking after the puck, a two goal deficit was a steep mountain to climb for the Clippers.

Mike Vandekamp pulled his goaltender for the extra man but James Neil jumped on a loose puck and made the most of his opportunity to get his first goal as a King and his first in the BCHL.

After the game Kings' captain Chris Williams said of his powerplay goal, "if there's a screen there you don't have to shoot it hard."

"If the goalie is down in a butterfly and you elevate it with a simple wrist shot, it's going to go in on a screen."

"That's what I did," he smiled.

James Neil, on the other hand, was ready to take a goal anyway he could.

"Finally," he grinned later.

It's not normal for him to see a zero in his goal column but he's on a steep learning curve as a rookie in the league.

"It's definitely a jump from midget to this," he said, "but I think I'm starting to adjust."

Of the game he said, "when we play our systems we play our best."

"When everyone buys in and when everyone is playing our system we usually win."

The dressing room was lively following the game but the news out of the WJAC of Canada West winning 2-1 over the Swedes in overtime drew a huge cheer for the team and especially Maguire, Richardson and Kent Lewis.

Kings and Clippers will play the back side of the doubleheader Saturday night at 7:30 P.M.
