Kings blank the Rivermen 5-0

Kings kept their winning streak going with a big 5-0 win over the Langley Rivermen on Saturday night.

In front of 813 fans which included a red carpet full of parents, the Kings kept turning up the pressure on the Rivermen until the goals poured in.

The first period ended in a scoreless tie as neither team could really generate any good scoring chances.

Kings finally got on the board in second the good old fashioned way with hard work, grit and the first BCHL goal for Jarryd Leung.

Despite it being the only goal of the game so far, Kings were controlling the puck and starting to get more chances on the Rivermen net.

Their perserverance paid off in the third when they tallied four times with Steven Schmidt, Cohen Adair, Carter Shinkaruk and Teagan Waugh turning on the light.

It was a good solid win for the Kings who didn’t take their foot off the pedal against the road weary Langley team.

"I’d like to see a little more urgency on the powerplay," said Kent Lewis, "but we were consistant and we kept our game going and we always say, ‘you’re going to jab an opponent alot, you’re going to jab an opponent alot and the knockout punch could take a little while and it did take a little while."

"But we didn’t give up much and that was the key," he praised.

Jamie Phillips got his first shutout in the BCHL after just two starts.

"It’s always good to get the first one out of the way," he said.

"The team battled really hard and they kept the shots down," he smiled, "and that’s all I could ask for the boys and they put the puck in the net and I’m glad we got the win."

He, like the rest of the team want to keep the winning streak alive.

"You want to go hard for 60 games – four games, four wins," he said, "that’s what we want to aim for every time and we’re going to come out hard tomorrow and every single game."

The rematch against Langley Rivermen goes Sunday 1:30 P.M. at the Hap.
