Kings do it again

For the second night in a row the Kings edged the Caps by a goal.

This time they needed overtime but the end result was 3-2 and good enough for four points on the weekend.

A better game overall for the Kings and both teams had more pep in their step in the first period.

Cowichan took advantage of a Kings turnover inside their own blueline and the wrist shot was bobbled by Jeff Smith and the rebound deposited at 8:40 by Taylor Allan.

Not a lot to get excited about for the next 30 minutes but JJ Coleshaw put together his own highlight reel package in 60 seconds.

First he raced down the left wing where he cranked a hard slap shot that Robin Gusse got a piece of, but the biggest piece tumbled into the far side of the net at 13:27.

Coleshaw missed one change and hopped onto the ice with Nogard and Grayson, then charged down the right wing and slipped the puck under Gusse's stick for the go-ahead goal at 14:24.

Kings held the 2-1 lead through the second and almost the third but lost a draw inside their blueline and the puck went to two Caps who banged away at it until Smith conceded the goal at 19:40.

First overtime had a couple of outside chances but no score until the second overtime.

The winner came off the stick of Luke Nogard who would not be denied with several drags, dekes and finally a shot that beat a defensely Gusse in the Capital's net.

Kings were better tonight with more of the play, a 31-23 shot advantage and generally sharper.

Admittedly though they know they have to close better and play a little smarter.

Jarid Lukosevicius said the Kings weren't really celebrating after the two wins.

"Not really feeling to good about ourselves," he admitted, "we played pretty bad."

"We strive personally for our best and this wasn't our best."

"We've got to build to be better and we are for the playoffs."

A couple of healthy Kings returned to the lineup but his is still missing Matt Scarth.

"Our line kind of struggled this weekend but hopefully he gets back soon and we can play better next weekend."

"We had a better night tongiht but puck luck wasn't going our way."

Coach Kent Lewis liked the second game better than the first one and also pointed out the play of speedy forward Hunter Findlater.

"I thought he did a good job," he said, "he's got speed."

"He played ahead of some of my guys because of that speed."

The Caps were game but Lukosevicius and his fellow Kings found a way to get the job done again with four points and a solid position atop the BCHL standings.
