Kings Drop Weekend Opener in Alberni

The Powell River Kings final 3-in-3 Island road trip is off to a bump start following a 3-2 loss in Alberni Valley on Friday night.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring 6 minutes in as Ryan Miotto redirected a point shot past Matteo Paler-Chow for a 1-0 advantage. The Kings got the goal back late in the period with a nice move down the left side and cut into the zone from Ben Thomas who scored his 10th of the season and 3rd in as many games for a 1-1 score through 20.

Teams continued to trade goals in the second as Alberni got an early tally off the stick of Tanner Pochipinski three minutes in, only for the Kings to cancel it out on the rush as Matt Rickard took the puck up ice, dropping off to Christian Buono in the slot for his 11th of the year and 2nd in as many games and a 2-2 score.

Alberni would go to their third powerplay midway through the game and finally convert as Mitch Deelstra beat Paler-Chow for the go-ahead goal that stood as the eventual game winner. Despite making several highlight reel saves, including a flashy glove stop in the first and a breakaway stop in the second, Paler-Chow took the loss with 24 saves, while Powell River peppered John Hawthorne with 40 shots.
