Kings Fall in Game 3 Overtime (Trail Series 3-0)

The Powell River Kings have their season on the line in a do-or-die game 4 on Tuesday night following a frustrating 3-2 overtime loss on Monday night.

Following an 0-2 weekend on Vancouver Island in games 1 and 2 of the Island Division Final series, the Powell River Kings were looking for the trend of home ice advantage to hold true as the series shifted to Powell River for games 3 and 4.

The Kings however came out flat, with Nanaimo out to an early 5-0 advantage in shots before scoring two goals 55 seconds apart in the first period. First, Devin Brosseau making a nice move off an offensive zone faceoff, then Sheldon Rempal scoring on a breakaway set the Kings back in the game and potentially the series.

A second period saw the Kings get back into the game as a Nanaimo powerplay yielded the first Powell River goal on the 15th shot of the game as Kyle Betts blocked a shot and beat out the backchecking Yanni Kaldis for his 5th of the playoffs and 4th in as many games, and a 2-1 scoreline.

Into the third period and the Kings would continue to push and carry a bulk of the play before Jonny Evans from the left goal like found a hole on Evan Johnson for his 3rd and a 2-2 score that would hold up through overtime.

The Kings had chances in overtime, mainly through the combination of Rylan Ball, Kyle Betts and Jonny Evans, however were unable to find the back of the net. It wasn’t until late in the frame when the Kings were unable to clear the puck before Yanni Kaldis buried his own rebound for his 2nd game winner of the playoffs and a 3-2 final.

Here’s what Kings Head Coach and GM Kent Lewis had to say after the game:

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Sheldon Rempal (Clippers) – 1 goal, 1 assist
  2. Kyle Betts (Kings) – 1 goal
  3. Yanni Kaldis (Clippers) – 1 goal, OT GWG

Game 4 of the series is Tuesday night at the Hap Parker Arena, a 7:00pm start.
