Kings play with inspiration

After a great game in Alberni Valley, Kings continued their inspired play with a boost from Captain Canuck, Trevor Linden, before the game.

A large crowd showed up for this game and the Kings responded with five goals enroute to a 5-1 win over the Caps.

Just as Linden would have done, it was Teagan Waugh doing all the work for the Kings' first goal as he dug the puck out down low and fed Jordan Burns on the point. Burns drilled a low shot, deflected by Bradyon Low, off the post and in to make it 1-0 Kings.

Call in the energy line of Nogard, Parker and Neil for number two as they hustled until Nogard smacked in a rebound at 6:08 to put the Kings up 2-0.

The second period ended that way and in the third Kings' Waugh got the goal he's been looking for at 4:17.

Dun may have been distracted by Low but Waugh's shot from a bad angle caught him off guard and the Kings' captain had his elusive first goal of the year.

"Hiff made a real nice play, chipping it by the D-man, Patterson" said Waugh, "and I managed to lift his stick."

"I was aiming for a low pad rebound where Low could just tap it in but it just snuck by, low glove side, the goalie."

Kings softened up a little after the 3-0 lead and the Caps took advantage of one of their few chances when Imoo was caught off guard.

"The guy took a shot, it might have been deflected," Imoo said, "and the puck bounced off the end boards and the trailer who was coming in got the rebound."

"It was right up close to the post but I probably should have had that one."

Back in the game, Cowichan gained some ground on the shot clock but otherwise were kept off the scoreboard with the only other event, a skirmish between Matt Joyaux and Teal Burns.

Cowichan took a penalty at the end of the period and Kings made them pay early in the third when Jordan Burns fired the puck from the point to make it 4-1.

The Kings next goal might have been the prettiest when, again on the powerplay, Benton crossed it over to Burns who spotted Dorantes on the back door and he slid a shot on the ice past Dun.

His goal was the final one in the game, 5-1, and the Kings skated out a strong effort and second win in two nights over island rivals.

Later, captain Waugh said, "we're starting to get back to Kings' hockey, limiting the other team to shots, chances – two goal, one goal and now a shutout finally."

"Getting back to our game and that's paying off."

"Second period has been a bit of a struggle for us and we know that," he admitted, "so we're trying to get real focused in the dressing room before periods."

"Yeah, a full 60 is huge."

Kings have a day off before Chilliwack ends a three game road trip on Sunday at 1:30 P.M.
