Mullin completes hat trick with double OT winner

The Powell River Kings (21-10-1-0) welcomed the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (10-16-2-1) to the Hap Parker Arena Friday evening and picked up two points thanks to Tristan Mullin’s winner.

The Kings opened up the scoring just over the half way point of the first after a shot from Callum Volpe went off Mullin and past Brody Claeys.

Just 17 seconds later however, the Bulldogs responded. Mackenzie Wight threw the puck from the goal line to the slot and Ryan Steele swept a shot through the five hole of Brian Wilson to tie things up.

Late in the first the Kings were able to grab their lead back. Just as a power play expired, Ben Berard took a pass from the right point from Johan Steen. Berard was parked in front, took the pass on his forehand with his back to the net and roofed a backhand over Claeys to give the Kings the lead heading into the second.

Just 3:11 into the second frame the Bulldogs tied the game. Wight gathered the puck in the neutral zone and carried the puck into the Kings end before wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Wilson.

Mullin would restore his teams lead with a similar goal to his first. Liam Lawson fired a one timer from the middle of the blue line that again deflected off Mullin and in.

The Kings ran into some penalty trouble in the third and power play goals just over three minutes apart by Jake Witkowski and Jordan Sandhu put the Kings behind for the first time on the night.

With a little over five minutes remaining, Kings captain Jake Kohlhauser picked a good time for his first of a year as his wrist shot from the blue line hit an Alberni player in front and deflected through the legs of Claeys to tie the game at four.

Late in the third Cam Donaldson was called for hooking, but the Kings survived the penalty kill to end off the period and for the first minute of overtime.

Near the end of the first OT, the Kings were the ones awarded with a power play as Donaldson had his stick slashed out of his hands.

Just 27 seconds into overtime, Muliln completed his hat trick as a one timer from Volpe hit him on its way to the net and deflected in.

The win pushed the Kings record to 5-1 in overtime games. It also moved them to 4-0 against the Bulldogs this season.

The two teams don’t have much time to think about Friday’s game as they square off again Saturday night at 5.
