Offence rolls again in 12-1 win over Coquitlam

The Powell River Kings (24-16-1-0) scored 10 goals for the first time since 2012 Friday night against the Prince George Spruce Kings, and now they’ve done it in back to back games as they rolled over the Coquitlam Express (7-31-1-2) 12-1.

The Kings scored four goals in each period Saturday night. In the first Carter Turnbull opened the scoring just 32 seconds after the game started by whipping a shot past Reid Cooper right off a face-off.

Cam Donaldson scored on the power play after letting go a one timer from the left face-off circle to make it 2-0. It was Donaldson’s 27th of the season and 14th power-play goal, tying Charlie Combs of the Wenatchee Wild for tops in the BCHL.

Donaldson scored again a little over three minutes later after taking a backhand pass from Jonny Evans to extend the lead to 3-0.

Coquitlam got one back shorthanded mid way through the period. Cameron Bartsch had three chances on net and converted on the final one by snapping a shot past the glove of Brian Wilson to make it 3-1.

Before the period was up the Kings would regain their three-goal lead after Turnbull deflected in a perfectly-placed pass from Matthew Cairns for his second of the game.

Early in the second Kyle Betts scored his first of three on the night when he took a pass from Gavin Rauser who was below the goal line before roofing the puck over Cooper to make it 5-1.

Tristan Mullin got in on the action by knocking home a loose puck during a five-on-three power play. It was Mullin’s 24th goal of the season, three shy of his total from last year.

Ben Berard found the back of the net for the third straight game in the second, he had some open ice after gathering the puck in the far corner, cut to the right face-off circle and ripped a shot into the top corner.

Betts would score his second of the night on a similar play to Donaldson’s first goal, firing a one timer past Cooper from the right face-off circle with just 11 seconds left in the period.

Evans added to his point total with a goal 5:31 into the final period as he was the recipient of a centring pass while standing in front of the net, recording his 21st of the season.

Rauser deflected in a shot from Jake Kohlhauser to give the Kings their 10th goal of the game for the second straight night.

Betts completed the hat trick by backhanding home a rebound in the crease after a shot from the blue line by Kohlhauser. It was Betts’ first career BCHL hat trick.

The final goal of the game was scored by Berard as he gathered the puck off a face-off in the Express zone before skating to the slot and firing a wrist shot past Cooper.

The Kings now turn their attention to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs for a rare Tuesday night home game. The Kings are on a three-game winning streak, and the last team to beat Powell River at home was Alberni.
