Read to Succeed Program Set to Kick-off

This year, The Powell River Kings, First Insurance and the Powell River Literacy Council wanted every elementary school student to be a Reading Hero.

From October 25 until this coming February 14th, the Kings visited one of the 7 grade schools in Powell River every Monday morning. The Kings either read aloud or read one-on-one with students in the class room assigned to them by the school principal and then would head out for a great game of road hockey during recess.

To encourage all the children to put their best reading effort forward, this year the program was being extended to offer weekly prizes to students who were making an extra effort with their reading.

?It?s not necessarily about who is the best reader,? says Tara Chernoff, Marketing Coordinator for First Credit Union. ?It?s about who?s putting in the most effort.? Any student from Kindergarten through to Grade 7 ccould win ? there was a winner in each school every week, and that Reading Hero was announced by one of the Kings or the school?s principal.

The weekly winners at each school received 2 tickets for a Powell River Kings Hockey Game and a $10 Gift Certificate from Breakwater Books. As well, they were entered in a draw for the Grand Prize ? which is the opportunity to be on the last monthly Reading Hero poster put out by the Powell River Literacy Council, and one of two 15-minute helicopter rides! The Grand Prize will be drawn and announced at a Kings? Game on Friday February 11th.

“It's wonderful to see the kids getting so excited about reading, and associating reading with fun,” says Emma Larocque, Literacy Outreach Coordinator. “The great thing about this program that it takes reading and, for many kids, makes it something they WANT to do, rather than something they HAVE to do – and that can only be a good thing!”

This program is sponsored by the Powell River Kings, First Insurance, and the Powell River Literacy Council. You can check First Credit Union?s YouTube channel for a video about the program at http://www.youtube.com/user/FirstCUgroup?feature=mhum.
