Kings win third straight game, 5-2 over Trail at BCHL Showcase

The Powell River Kings won their third straight game Saturday afternoon, 5-2 over the Trail Smoke Eaters at the BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack.

A scoreless first period saw the shots tied at 10 each, before the Kings found their scoring touch in the second.

Nearly midway through the period, Ted McGeen scored his first career BCHL goal when he was stopped on a partial breakaway, but knocked in the rebound out of midair at 9:19. The only assist went to Ian Ross, his first career point.

Thirty seconds later, the Kings struck again. Jonny Evans had the puck near the left-wing boards before throwing a centring pass to the net. Lucas Fraulin was parked in front and slapped home his first career goal to give the Kings a 2-0 lead.

Just over two minutes later, McGeen scored again. His wraparound attempt rolled through the crease, but bounced off a skate and went to the slot. McGeen gathered the puck again and fired a shot along the ice, beating Zack Dyment blocker side to give the Kings a 3-0 lead.

After a late penalty against the Kings in the second, the Smoke Eaters started the third on the man advantage. It didn’t take them long to strike, as Kale Howarth took a centring pass and one timed a shot through the five hole of Mitch Adamyk to cut the lead to 3-1 just 34 seconds into the period.

Sixteen seconds later, Trial struck again. This time a shot came from the right side of the ice that Adamyk thought he had stuck between his blocker arm and body. The puck was actually sitting on his pad, and rolled off into the crease for Jack Sitzman to tap home his second goal of the season.

The Kings didn’t let two quick goals get to them, and took advantage of a power play of their own. With Ethan Martini off for intentionally knocking the net off, Cam Donaldson sniped home his first career goal from the right face-off circle to give the Kings a two-goal lead again.

Despite pressure from both teams, neither one was able to find the back of the net again until Curtis McCarrick scored into an empty net with just seconds left in the game for the 5-2 final.

The Kings now return home for three straight home games, beginning with Wednesday’s matchup against the Nanaimo Clippers, before welcoming Vernon Friday and Victoria Saturday.
