Eagles hand Kings an 8-1 defeat

BURNABY (April 10, 2021) – After an 5-4 win against Coquitlam on Friday night, the Powell River Kings were unable repeat with a victory on Saturday afternoon.

The matinee tilt saw the Kings fall 8-1 to the Surrey Eagles, including six unanswered goals scored by Surrey in the second and third period for the win.

Powell River was down 2-0 after the first period with goals 1:17 apart with goals from Holden Cardinal and Brett Bliss.

The Kings got on the scoresheet 56 seconds into the second period with Ethan Riesterer’s second of the season, but that would prove to be their only goal of the game. The Eagles would score three straight to close the second period, including a short-handed and power play goal.

Three additional goals from Surrey in the third period put the game out of reach. Jacob Slipec, Buddy Johnson, Holden Katzalay, Michael Abgrall and Tait Ross would be the additional goal scorers for the Eagles.

Rookie goaltender Max Prazma made 21 saves for his first win with the Eagles this season, while Thomas Wardle stopped 16 of 21 shots in the first two periods before Jakob Drapeau took over in the third, putting aside 8 of 11 shots.

“We were chasing the game the entire time. We were slow getting to assignments and losing battles. It was a tough afternoon for sure,” commented Kings head coach Brock Sawyer. “You learn a lot about yourself and your group in these kinds of games so we are looking forward to Monday night. I give the Eagles credit, they came in ready to play. ”

The Kings get a day of rest before taking to the ice on Monday, April 12 for an evening game against the Coquitlam Express, the puck drops at 8pm at Scotia Barn in Burnaby.
