Kings Fall in Close One, 2-1 to Express

Coming into the contest, there were two stories surrounding this season series. First, special teams would likely play a big role, and secondly, the hot goaltending that the Express have gotten, usually from their backups. Forms of both manifested themselves in some form in a 2-1 Express win over the Kings on Thursday night.

With so much made of the Express powerplay, Coquitlam opened the scoring in the 1st period, a little over 11 minutes into the contest on a good shot from Alex Kerfoot, just 19 seconds into the team’s 1st man advantage of the game, 1-0 Express through 20.

Into the 2nd and Steve Schmidt would get a pass from Matt Scarth to the side of the net, after Carter Shinkaruk did a good job of tying up the defence in the corner, making it 1-1 on Schmidt’s 6th of the season. It stayed that way all the way until 3:25 left in the 3rd period where Brady Shaw somehow got the puck past Sean Maguire as he was falling over, it ended up being the game winning goal as the Kings took a couple of  penalties at the end of the game, helping the Express kill off the final 3 minutes and take 2 points from the Kings.

Next action for the team comes up on New Years Eve, as the Kings face the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at 5:00pm, followed by the annual NYE Party! You can catch the game live on SunFM and BCHL PPV if you can’t make it, and you can still get your tickets for the party at the office.
