Kings ring out the old with 5-1 win over Alberni

Kings ensured the New Years celebration after the game was a happy one with a 5-1 victory over the Alberni Bulldogs.

James Neil got things started with the Kings first goal at 2:21. Leung had taken his shot and the rebound dropped right to Neil who punched it home.

Right after that there was a problem with the gate in the Bulldogs end and the lengthy delay took some sting out of the Kings momentum.

Alberni threatened to even the score on several occasions but Maguire was solid in the net and the score was 1-0 after one period.

Alberni was taking it to the Kings early in the second but Carter Shinkaruk stopped them cold when he scored on a 30 foot wrist shot at 4:45 and then Evan Richardson converted a nice centering pass from Waugh 8 seconds later to open the lead to 3-1.

Dylan Nowakowski slipped a shot by Maguire low and on the far side at 8:22 but Cohen Adair, in Bobby Orr fashion, scored from his knees at 16:36 on the powerplay to make it 4-1 after two periods.

Kings pretty well shut down the Bulldogs through most of the third period and the Dogs frustration started to show itself through some chippy play which turned into penalties and the Kings fifth goal from Teagan Waugh at 18:44.

Kings needed this performance and this win to maintain their second place standing in the hotly contested coastal conference playoff race.

Kings went 2 for 7 on the powerplay and outshot the Dogs 35 – 27 in a game where the score justified the Kings effort.
