Kings Heartbreak in Overtime, Fall 4-3

The Kings held 2-goal leads twice throughout the game, but surrendered a game-tying goal with 16.6 seconds remaining in the 3rd period, then fell in overtime 4-3. The Kings trail the best-of-seven series 3-0.

The Kings got a great start and were rewarded early with Cohen Adair latching onto a puck off the end boards after a Craig Dalrymple shot went wide, his 6th and a 1-0 lead. Towards the end of the 1st period, the Kings doubled the lead as Brendon MacDonald was in the right place at the right time, a puck around the boards came off a Vees skate, stuck to MacDonald’s stick and he wrapped around through a clueless Chad Katunar and the Kings had a 2-0 lead.

Into the 2nd and the Vees got the Kings lead back to 1 with a Troy Stecher shot from a long way out finding a hole on Sean Maguire. Stecher’s 2nd and a 2-1 game through 40 minutes, with the Kings again outshooting the Vees 24-16. The 3rd period would bring a whole tonne of drama and entertainment as the Kings would restore their 2-goal lead through a beautiful Cohen Adair highlight-reel goal walking off the wall along the goal line and roofing it over the shoulder of Chad Katurnar. Adair’s 2nd of the game and 7th of the playoffs for a 3-1 lead.

The Vees would come back 2 minutes later through Nick Buchanan’s seeing-eye shot from the blue line, picking a top corner on Maguire, Buchanan’s 1st of the post season and a 3-2 game. We were set for a final flurry and the Vees tied the game with 16 seconds left in regulation, Travis St. Denis’ 5th of the playoffs and a 3-3 game with the Kings heading into overtime for the 2nd time this post-season.

We weren’t there for long, as just 5 minutes into the overtime period, the Vees got it into the slot and Wade Murphy slid it 5-hole for a 4-3 overtime win and a 3-0 series lead. Here’s what Geoff Grimwood had to say after the game:
