Kings take game 1 of preseason

The Kings returned to action yesterday in preseason action with a trip out to Duncan to take on the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

The first period the Kings took some time to find their footing as the Caps were putting pressure on early, but the team was bailed out by rookie goaltender Zak Brice who stood on his head the first 10 minutes of the game. A big reason why we were scoreless after the first 20 minutes.

The second period was off to a flying start, just 2 minutes in as Max Potvin drove to the next and centered the puck, and after a mad scramble the puck was poked pass Capitals netminder Jayden Shull. Originally called a goal on the ice, the referees had a discussion afterwards and reversed the call. The Kings did not let that get to them and continued to put on the pressure. They were eventually rewarded on the power play as Branden Toye was looking to make a cross ice pass towards the net, but luckily it hit a Caps defender and deflected in to give the Kings the 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd.

The Kings started the 3rd period shorthanded but kept up the pressure as Karter McNarland took stretch pass from Parker Lalonde and sniped it top corner from the to top of the right faceoff circle to extend the lead to 2. The special teams continued to roll on at 11:33 as some great passing on a 5 on 3 leads to McNarland being open in the slot and he makes no mistake and scores his second of the game. 20 seconds later still on the powerplay Branden Toye finds himself with the puck in the slot and he shows that he can snipe too, and scores his second of the game. The Capitals would eventually get one back with a power play marker of her own but that would be all as the Kings win 4-1.

Kings powerplay goes 3 for 6 on the night, while Parker LaLonde picks up 2 assists while Zak Brice makes 32 saves in his BCHL debut.

Up next is the first of a double header in Chilliwack against the Chiefs this Friday at 6pm.
