Late Goal Sees Yellow Trump Black

A pair of late 2nd period goals 28 seconds apart, combined with a Hunter Findlater game winner just over 2 minutes from time gave Team Yellow a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon in the 2nd and final game of the 2014 Main Camp.

Team Black opened the scoring as Gavin Rauser beat Dawson Rodin to make it 1-0. That goal would hold up through 20, with Black leading shots on goal 15-11. Into the 2nd and Black would double the lead, with Jarid Lukosevicius scoring his 2nd of camp, assisted by Jacob Pritchard and Ryan Grills to make it 2-0.

It appeared Black would hold the lead through 40, however a nice passing play between Stephen Hiff and Kurt Keats was capped by the Winnipeg product for his first of camp and a 2-1 scoreline. Then off the ensuing faceoff, a Colton Sandberg dump-in stranded Stefan Wornig behind the net when it hit a seam in the boards and allowed Keenan Scardina to tap in a gift to tie the game up at 2 through 40. Shots on goal in the period were 11-6 Black for a 2-period total of 26-17.

Into the 3rd and overtime looked certain, however Hunter Findlater found a loose puck in close and was able to beat Dawson Rodin for his 2nd of camp at a 3-2 victory for Yellow, to split the series with Team Black.

Final shots on goal were 36-26 in favour of Team Black. Here’s the unofficial box score:

During camp, I had a chance to catch up with Jacob Pritchard and Jordan Burns to talk about this past weekend, and the season ahead.

The Kings have now trimmed their roster down to 26 players to work with between now and the Showcase. The team will run practices this week and next, before exhibitions in the lower mainland September 12th, 13th and 14th.
